Loretta Howard Gallery is pleased to present David Row: Counter Clockwise opening Thursday, September 6th, 6:00-8:00 PM, through Saturday, October 20th, 2018.
Within his new series of work, Row continues to investigate the dynamic of the irregularly shaped panel with architectural precision, heavily worked surfaces of oil paint and complex internal structures. The predominant energy and motion is countered by an underlining geometric logic. The dynamic ellipse or x shapes are completed by the viewer’s eye outside of the picture plane thus pushing boundaries by activating the surrounding space. These paintings are primarily frontal but can also be read as spatial and as such once again activate perception. Row’s color and paint are luxurious– rich deep blues and dense blacks are contrasted by thin lines of vivid bright lines demarcating junctures.
David Row was born 1949 in Portland, Maine. He studied at Yale University from 1968-1974 receiving both a BA and an MFA. There he met the painter Al Held who would become a lifelong friend and mentor. Immediately following his studies he moved to New York City where he became a prominent member of a new young generation of artists including Peter Halley, Mary Heilmann, and David Reed.
His works are in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including: The Ackland Art Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Carnegie Museum of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, the JP Morgan Chase Collection and the Portland Museum of Art. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant in Painting (1987) and the Isaac N. Maynard Prize for Painting from the National Academy Museum, in New York (2008).
A fully illustrated catalogue will be published as well as a video conversation with John Zinsser. For additional information and press inquiries, please contact Loretta Howard at 212-695-0164 or gallery@lorettahoward.com.
